Perimenopause… What a whirlwind of a time!

Although this transition phase out of a woman’s fertile years has never really had much time in the spotlight, it does not happen without drama.  Perimenopause can occur between 2 to 12 years before menopause begins and has been called a woman’s second puberty (Yikes!).

There is no real test to diagnose when a woman is in perimenopause, her symptoms will be the best indicator. During this time, Oestrogen fluctuates and can be at its highest, causing symptoms such as sore and swollen breasts, heavy menstrual flow, increased histamine, headaches, allergies and irritability!  But then comes the drop of oestrogen, which can put a woman at risk of insulin resistance and neurological symtpoms like memory loss, brain fog, and dementia risk, not to mention the hot flushes and palpitations.

And then there’s wonderful Progesterone, which will steadily start to decline.  Progesterone has a calming and nourishing effect on the brain during a woman’s reproductive years, so a decline in this hormone may leave a woman at risk of anxiety, depression, night sweats, hot flushes, insomnia and migraines, just to name a few.

Although perimenopause is a natural transition into menopause and some symptoms will normally and naturally occur, it is also a real tipping point for a woman.  Keeping well during this time and prioritising her needs will benefit a woman greatly and can prevent certain chronic health conditions at risk of developing during perimenopause.

Lifestyle and diet changes such as limiting or avoiding alcohol and refined sugars can be a real game changer.  Yoga, breathwork and more downtime will soothe the nervous system. Vitamins, minerals, nutrients, herbs and homeopathic remedies can be invaluable during the perimenopausal stage.  Tailoring individual requirements through Naturopathic support can help a woman in perimenopause to feel balanced, empowered and excited for the next phase of her life.
