Somatic Sexology
with meg callander
Sexuality is an important part of being human. We are sexual beings from the moment we have a body, until the day we die. While it’s easy to assume sexuality is just about sex and reproduction, it encompasses so much more. Sexuality includes who and how we love, our pleasure and eroticism, our identity and expression, and what we believe and value about sex. Sexologists have an in-depth understanding of human sexuality, and are helpful guides for anyone wishing to explore and grow their sexual self.
You can think of somatic sexologists as “body-based” sexologists who have pursued additional training in embodiment, mindfulness, and neurobiology. Somatic roughly translates to ‘relating to the body’ and is derived from the Ancient Greek “soma” which means Body. While somatic sexologists do use traditional counselling and talk-therapy in sessions, they challenge the notion of “mind over matter”. Somatic sexologists acknowledge the wisdom of the body and offer space and accessible tools to help people listen to, trust and feel at home in their sexual body.
What happens in sessions?
Every session is client-centred, so we follow a pace and plan that is relevant and useful for you. The initial session feels different to follow-up appointments because the focus of this session is to develop a grounded understanding of your current experience. In this first appointment, we explore your history, context, resources and goals. This helps me get a sense of what it’s like to stand in your shoes.
Subsequent sessions are co-created, as we work together to explore your experience in a curious and compassionate way. My approach involves a mix of embodied counselling, somatic inquiries and practices, and sexuality education. The combination of these tools can help you connect to new perspectives and inner wisdom, desires and edges. From here, it becomes possible to rewrite unsatisfying sexual scripts and access more pleasure and fulfilment.
Topics and themes we can explore include:
Increasing sexual satisfaction and pleasure
Low sexual desire and sexual desire discrepancy in relationships
Sexual pain and fear of pain leading up to sex
Navigating sex in the pre and postnatal period
Orgasm difficulty – no orgasm, early or delayed orgasm
Performance anxiety, sexual aversion and avoidance
Sexual communication – expressing needs & desires, setting sexual boundaries
Early ejaculation and erection difficulties
Increasing intimacy, safety and trust in relationships
Sexual identity issues
If you have a sexual concern that isn’t listed above, please get in touch so I can point you in the right direction.
What doesn’t happen in sessions?
Sessions do not involve any kind of nudity, physical examination or sexual activity. If you are interested in accessing services that provide these options, we can work together to find a more appropriate service provider for you.
How can these sessions help?
Sex therapy is an enlightening and empowering experience that can support people to develop a realistic understanding of sex and pleasure, identify and address underlying causes of challenging sexual experiences, and deepen their sexual connection with themselves and sexual partners.
Who are these sessions for?
Individuals and couples from all walks of life are welcome and will be treated with respect. These sessions will be a particularly good fit for folks who
are open-minded, curious and who suspect that their body holds just as much intelligence as their mind!
